2017 SU Bidding Update: FISU Delegates Meet President Chinese Taipei

Meeting with President MA Ying-Jeou

TAIPEI CITY – On the last day of the four-day inspection visit in Taipei, theFISU Evaluation Committee met with President MA Ying-Jeou in the morning. President MA is well known by his great passion to sport and sport policy. He welcomed the members of the FISU Evaluation Committee and emphasized on the infrastructure and experienceTaipei has for hosting a multi-sport event and gave his word to fully support the bid ofTaipei for these top-level university student games.

Following the meeting with President MA, the FISU Evaluation Committee had their internal meeting for template evaluation. After lunch, the press conference chaired by Mayor HAU Lung-Bin took place at the city hall at 2 o’clock. Mayor HAU and Mr. Igarashi gave short speeches and afterwards the floor was open to the press. Questions were raised to the mayor and FISU regarding the strengthTaipeihas to win the bid. Mayor HAU indicated that Taipei is experienced in international sport events and with more than 50 universities in the city, the 2017 Summer Universiade will fully connect with university students. Support from the central government, neighboring cities as well as national sports federations and over two million citizens will stand for the bid of Taipei. “Taipei is ready, and we are ready” said Mayor HAU.

Mr. Hisato Igarashi reviewed the four-day inspection. “We fully understand what the city wants and is ready for 2017 Summer Universiade.Taipei has improved a lot compared to two years ago for the bidding of the 2015 Summer Universiade. The high percentage of existing facilities is a good sign and Taipei is indeed in a better condition. The finance with strong support from the central government is also a healthy sign for Taipei’s bidding” said Mr. Igarashi.
