2012 WUC Update: 2012 WUEC Organizing Committee talks about Competition Planning

AACHEN On its third session on the 4th of October, the organizing committee of the 2012 World University Equestrian Championship (WUEC) in Aachen evaluates the work results and is pleased about the progress. The planning of competitions was in the main focus. On the 5th of October the organizers went to the CHIO grounds to inform themselves about the competitions sites, which will be the setting for the WUEC from August 22nd to 26th, 2012.

On the third session of the organizing committee, the responsible persons for the several sub fields, reviewed the good work results and discussed the planning of competitions for the 2012 WUEC in detail. Also the responsible FISU Technical Delegate for Equestrian, Daniel Armbruster, took part in the meeting. An international sport event like the WUEC 2012 is already in the planning stage dependent upon the help of volunteers. Therefore also the representatives of the University riding groups from Aachen and Frankfurtare members of the organizing committee. With them, representatives of the German Academic Riding Federation e. V. (DAR) and the discipline head riding of the German University Sports Federation (adh), Ken Bräutigam, the responsible person of adh and of the RWTH University Sport Department (HSZ) talked about the differentiated challenges for horsemen and horsewomen and horse in a major sporting event like the 2012 WUEC. The competitions should take place in front of thousands of spectators. Moreover the worldwide unique equestrian show ground within the Aachen Soers is also for experienced horses not an everyday setting. Therefore it is important to plan specific training hours in time, in order that the horses are able to get accustomed to the unusual environment. Under the leadership of President Dr. Verena Burk, the organizing committee reviewed important results in all sub fields. Besides logistic challenges, the question of accommodations for the participants and Officials, as well as the planning of advertising measures, the circle of organizers also dedicated itself to the sponsor search, which shall be pursued in the upcoming months.

A Tour of the Aachen Soers

On the following day a delegation of the adh and of the HSZ made a tour of the Aachen Soers in order to deepen their knowledge about the sport facility. Furthermore they learned several interesting facts about the history of high class equestrian sport inAachen. Within the tour of the sport facility of the Aachen-Laurensberger Rennvereins e.V. (ALRV), the Deutsche Bank Stadium was particularly important to the organizers, as here student horsemen and horsewomen from over more than 20 nations will compete with each other at the 2012 WUEC. The stadium was inaugurated in 1999 and has 4,500 seats, 160 reserved for VIP guests. Furthermore the stadium is the annual venue for the dressage tournament within the CHIO Aachen, which is the most renowned equestrian sport event of the world.

Johanna Heiliger, assistant director of the 2012 WUEC explains her impressions during the tour: ‘The stadium offers an impressive surrounding for human and horse. Here the Equestrian Sport history is almost tangible. It is amazing, that the 2012 WUEC can take place here in the Deutsche Bank Stadium on the CHIO grounds.’
