Presentation of the Taipei Dome for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies by the Architect

TAIPEI CITY The FISU Evaluation Committee for the 2017 Summer Universiade carried on the second day of inspections yesterday October 16th. They visited 6 venues for 10 sports plus the Dome for opening and closing ceremonies. The inspection started from the Taipei Arena and Taipei Stadium that are just next to each other. The Taipei Arena is for basketball finals with a capacity of 15,000 seats and Taipei Stadium with the certificate of IAAF is for football and athletics finals. Later the committee visited the Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center for Fencing and was satisfied with these 3 venues for 4 sports inspected this morning.

After the morning section, the FISU Evaluation Committee was invited for a lunch hosted by the Minister of Education, Mr. Ching-Ji WU in the company of university presidents.  This was not just another lunch but a guarantee of the fully support from the ministry of education and all the universities for Taipei’s bidding of 2017 Summer Universiade.

After the lunch, the FISU delegates carried on their inspection to the Taipei Physical Education College (TPEC) where the bidding committee proposed to have Swimming, Diving, Taekwondo and Rhythmic Gymnastics in one big newly completed building. Some concerns about capacity, access for different people of different sports and operational space were raised and the bidding committee took the advise and will manage to meet FISU’s requirements.

The second stop in the afternoon was the construction site of the Taipei Tennis Center.  The budget has already been approved by the city council and there will be an evaluation meeting next spring to finalize the design. Another construction site, the Taipei Dome, was inspected for the opening and closing ceremonies and the architect from Australia personally gave the presentation to FISU. The MMC, next to the Dome, was also included in the presentation and the proposed media hotels were just around the corner.

The last two stops were theWorld Trade Center I and II for Judo and Table Tennis respectively. After a very productive inspection visit, a relaxing dinner in the suburb gave a perfect full stop as today the FISU delegates will move to the neighbor city for more sport venues.
