2011 WU Update – Day 6 – Ice Hockey

31 January 2011

SVK vs. KAZ

ERZURUM Today, February 1st, only the men faced-off, while the women had a rest day. The day started with a game between two newcomers in the Universiade ice hockey tournament, i.e. Belarus versus Slovenia, the next hosts of the Winter Universiade. The first period stayed scoreless, but in the second Belarus got a 3-1 lead and they finished the third with two more goals, putting a 5-1 on the scoreboard.

The second game put Spain against USA which would turn out to be a genuine thriller and was only decided in the third period as the first two stayed scoreless. Two minutes in the third, Team USA finally opened the score via Sheenan. Hardly a minute later Muñoz-Crego equalized. One minute later USA scored again. Half way the period Team USA scored two more goals bringing the final score to 4-1.

The last game of the day Slovakia played against Kazakhstan in what seemed to be a very physical game with hard bodychecks and several ‘excursions’ to the penalty box. After two periods the Slovaks gained a 4-2 lead and they finished the job in the last period netting two more goals bringing the final score to 6-2.
