2011 WU Update: FISU Sport Science Conference

ERZURUM – From Monday, 24 january to Wednesday 26, january, the FISU Winter Universiade Sport and Science Conference has offered its 280 participants a very high level of scientific presentations on the general theme : « The impact of university sport on regional development and health ».

Ethics was one of the major topics in discussion with a keynote presentation by Pr Ohran Güvenen (Bilkent University – Turkey) who demonstrated that ethics is a necessary condition for any system optimal at the individual, corporation, national state and international sphere levels.

Dr Zerihun Jemaneh (Ethiopian Higher Education Sport Association) stated that for education, university sports and sport in general, ethics is equally a necessary condition of optimizing the system.

A very original study about sport and nationality in the media was presented by Arnaud Richard (FF Sport-U). It deals with categorization processes in televised live commentaries and demonstrates the strong influence of local and national ideologies on popular sports rethoric.

Pr Carmen de Jong (Université de Savoie, France) made an exciting presentation about sustainable development and environmental concerns, that could be considered as part of ethics and essential when considering long term Regional development, and opened the door to the keynote presentation made by Pr Onur Özoy (Ankara University) who discussed the impact of the 25th Winter Universiade on Erzurum’s economy and Regional development.

Mrs Kairis Ulp, FISU Assessor and Chair SU Winter, underlined the importance of the Winter Universiade in the programme and history of FISU and for the organizers, and presented a comparative parallel between Winter Universiade and winter Olympics.

Dr Janice Harvey (Mc Master University, Canada and CESU Medical committee), made a link between Health concerns and ethics in sports by presenting the antidoping control in an Olympic perspective : the Vancouver Games. She insisted on the importance of developing and implementing an educational antidoping program, and promoting ethical values of the « doping free » sport. Renata Kopczyk (University of Wroclaw, Poland) presented the concept of ethics in sports and dangers of moderns a sport by focusing on the legal aspects of the fight against doping .

Pr Dr Gyongyi Foldesi (CESU member) opened a passionate debate with the audience about the question : « Who is responsible of the promotion of the students health by sport at the international, national, university and individual levels ?

Pr Dr Bingshu Zhong (Beijing Sports University, China) introduced the development of health-oriented university sport reform in China, and gave an analysis of the problems facing university sport today in China.
