2015 WU Update: Work Meeting in Granada

14 December 2010

GRANADA At the occasion of its very first meeting on December 13th, 2010, the Board of the Local Organizing Committee of the 2015 Winter Universiade in Granada invited a delegation from FISU to be present. FISU was represented by FISU Secretary General/CEO Eric SAINTROND (BEL), Chair of CTI Roger ROTH (SUI) and Director of WU Milan AUGUSTIN (SVK).

The meeting which was held at the University of Granada in the Rector’s office, was attended by delegates from the sport institutions and authorities of Granada City Hall, the Andalucian Government, the Sport Council of Spain and last but not least the Spanish University Sports Federation. The meeting was chaired by prof. Francisco Sanchez-Montes Gonzalez, the General Coordinator of the 2015 WU.

The different sports institutions, represented by their experts, presented very satisfying projects regarding the future planning of the overall infrastructure of all foreseen sport and non-sport venues within the city of Granada (ice sports and Athletes’ Village), the Sierra Nevada Ski resort (Alpine Skiing, Snowboarding, Freestyle Skiing) and Puerto de la Ragua (Biathlon and Cross Country Skiing).

The FISU delegates pointed out a couple of strategic issues to all involved National Sports Federations and the Spanish University Sports Federation.

The fruitful discussion among all parties showed a number of construction projects which have already been launched with experienced companies as it is the case for Biathlon and Cross Country: projects designed by Ecosign – Mountain Resort Planners ltd. and supervised by FIS and IBU experts Mr. Egli and Mr.Prucker.

The Sierra Nevada ski resort presented by Director-General Maria José Lopez assured all parties that the projects will be on track thanks to the experienced team supervised by Eduardo Valenzuela. As it was stipulated, the aim of the Regional Government is to belong to the best European ski resorts and the WU will be a fantastic promotion for the Sierra Nevada resort.

The FISU delegates were delighted to hear that the ice sports projects have been moved ahead in Granada. A permanent double ice pad arena is planned as well as two temporary arenas. A curling rink will be built on campus which will be a great opportunity to develop this sport among the students and public in Granada.

The 2015 WU OC will be a part of the observer program during the upcoming 2011 WU in Erzurum.
