Kazan Holds Snowball Fighting Championship

KAZAN – The Ultimate Snowball Fighting Championship – Kazan Open 2010 – took place in the capital of Tatarstan on December 12th. The tournament was organized by the Kazan 2013 Executive Committee and the Students League.

The event gathered over 100 participants – students of Kazan’s universities, institutes, technical schools and colleges, Kazan 2013 volunteers and all enthusiasts of this ancient game of all ages. The youngest entrant was 11 and the oldest one was 53 years old.

The championship had three events: snowball throwing (long-range and target) and duel fighting. Team events were held as well the participants of which contended for the Cup of the 2nd Snowball Fighting Championship. According to Alexey Chupin, one of the organizers of the event, the teams were made up of maximum five people. The Tupolev Kazan State Technical University topped the team standings and earned the Cup.

The tournament culminated in a mass Sviyazhsk vs Bolgar snowball fight aimed to support the charity campaigns for the preservation of Tatarstan’s architectural heritage – the ancient city of Bolgar and the island of Sviyazhsk.

The 1st Ultimate Snowball Fighting Championship was held on January 9th, 2010. The event brought together 100 volunteers and students.

Universiade Village Hosts Volleyball Tournament

The Burevestnik Sports Complex held a volleyball tournament between residents of the Universiade Village and of residence halls of Kazan Federal University (KFU) on December 12^th and 13th.

The championship was organized by the Kazan 2013 Executive Committee and Kazan Federal University. Ildar Siburov, sports organizer of the Universiade Village and 2nd year student of the Geology Department of KFU, stated that the primary purpose of the championship was to establish friendly relations among students, to promote volleyball and to sharpen sports skills.

The championship brought together 6 men’s and 6 women’s teams that represented combined teams of the Universiade Village and KFU’s residence halls. All in all, there were 72 entrants for the tournament.

The teams were drawn into two groups, with the top two progressing to the last round. Following the results of the group stage, the women’s final match saw an encounter of the residence hall #5 of the Universiade Village and the residence hall #4 of KFU that ended with a win of the latter.

As for the men’s events, the teams of the residence hall #7 of the Universiade Village and of the residence hall # 6 of KFU advanced to the final. In a tight struggle the team of the Universiade Village posted a 3-2 win, turning the tables on KFU’s residence halls for the defeat over the women’s team.
