UTech, Jamaica Dominates Jamaica Intercollegiate Sports Awards

PORT ANTONIO – The University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech, Jamaica) dominated the Jamaica Intercollegiate Sports Awards ceremony Thursday afternoon October 7, 2010 held at the College of Agriculture, Science and Education (CASE) when they copped eleven awards along with two of their track and field athletes Salcia Slack and O’Dayne Richards named champion track and field athlete for 2009/2010.

They were awarded for champions in the following categories: Women’s Basketball and Men’s Division One; Men’s Table Tennis; Men’s Beach Volleyball and hard court; Netball Division One and Rally; Tennis; Women’s Field Hockey; Division One Men’s Football and all island play-off and Men’s and Women’s Track and Field Athletics champions.

Alain Bailey (University of Arkansas) was adjudged the top International Student athlete for his 8.35m jumped this year which was the 4th longest jump in the year internationally and Jamaica’s second longest jump. Three time All-American and all regional champion 2009; NCAA Mid East regional champion and outdoor field athlete of the year. He will be graduating with a Business degree, specializing in Logistics and Transportation in December.

GC Foster College of Physical Education and Sports copped five awards: Women’s Football, Volleyball Junior Netball and Rugby which was competed for the first time; University of the West Indies (Mona) copped three: Women’s Table Tennis and Field Hockey, Greg Garrell Knock-out Football competition and Mico University College Cricket and All-Island Netball.

National students who represented the nation in different sporting disciplines were recognized as well.

Major Jonathan LameyGuest speaker Major Jonathan Lamey, Vice-President CASE Academic Program challenged the student-athletes to be at their best and to look at the avenue of sport tourism and sport marketing.

1st VP Ventley Brown in delivering the Presidents address spoke about Intercol becoming a limited liability company and the plans of the new executive to lift the standard of the intercollegiate sports in Jamaica.
