Highlights and Medals of the 2010 Brazilian League

29 September 2010

RECIFE From September 21st to 25th, Recife welcomed more than 850 athletes who competed in the finals of the 2010 Brazilian Sports University League. There were 50 teams representing 25 universities from twelve states, competing in soccer, handball, volleyball and basketball tournaments. More than 80 games in six sports venues around Recife and the metropolitan area were played.

Santa Catarina’s girls won three trophies and became this year’s champions in futsal, with Uniarp; in volleyball with Furb and in basketball with Uniasselvi.

Playing at home, with their fan support, Pernambuco got nine medals in the finals of the 2010 Brazilian League: gold in handball with AESO (men) and FMN (women), two silvers and five bronzes. São Paulo was the second delegation with multiple podiums (1 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze).

Rio de Janeiro (champion in basketball with UCB), Minas Gerais (gold in men’s volleyball with Politécnica), Ceará (silver in futsal with Unifor), Alagoas (silver in male handball with Cesmac) and Amapá (bronze handball with CEAP) completed the medal standings of the League.

And while the athletes performed at their best in the games, the volunteers of the Brazilian Sports University Confederation (CBDU), in charge of the League, sweat outside the courts. A team of 60 volunteers (young university students), physiotherapists, rescuers from the Fire Department, referees, support staff and the Organizing Committee worked hard to make these finals a big success. In the restaurant of the event, the staff prepared and served more than four tons of food during the finals week. Over 200 rooms in three hotels in Recife were booked to receive athletes, coaches and officials. A fleet of 40 vehicles (including cars, vans and buses) circulated about 4,000 km per day on routes between hotels, the restaurant and venues.

The Brazilian University Sports League reached its fifth edition celebrating a record of participants in the qualifying tournaments in the states, regional and national stages. “More than four thousands students were involved at the League’s qualifying stages around the country. And at the finals in Recife we had high-level technical games and an increased participation of universities which shows that the competition is consolidated in the national university sporting calendar”, CBDU President and FISU Vice-President Luciano Cabral said.
