2010 WUC Chess Update: Competition Starts

ZURICH On September 4th, in Zurich were held the meetings (CISCA and General technical meeting) for the participants of the 11th World University Chess Championship. The Championship will start on today September 5th, 10 a.m., in the ‘Lichthof’ of the University of Zurich. In the name of FISU, EC member Hassan Chikh welcomed the athletes at the official opening ceremony. At 2 p.m. the first found commences in the “Ehemalige Chemiegebäude” of the Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich.

More than 20 nations, from Brasil and Canada over Mongolia to Zimbabwe have entered the list. The majority of players arrived in Zurich on Saturday, among them the odds-on favorite in the men’s category, Wang Yue from China. The 23-year-old grandmaster and student of the Communications Studies at Nankai University in Tianjin is number 16 in the September world ranking. His fiercest rivals come from Russia: grandmasters Igor Lysyj and Pavel Ponkratov.

The current individual entry lists 37 women and 60 men, but the final numbers will not be known until the start of the first game. The two individual contests consist of nine rounds each and will last until 11 September. Apart from the men’s and women’s champions there will also be a nations’ classification, where each country is represented by its three best results.
