KAMPALA The World University Woodball Championship competition took off yesterday, August 23rd, by the shores of Lake Victoria near Kampala, Uganda. The 1st round singles men and women started in the morning and ended in the afternoon, completing the 24 gates.

After the first round, Chinese Taipei is dominating the proceedings leading both men’s and women’s rankings. This is even more evident in the woman’s competition where the top three ranked players are Hsin I Tseng (103 strokes), Ying Chi Peng (112) and Chih Ya Tsai (112), all from Chinese Taipei. In total, 24 female athletes from 8 countries are competing to access the finals that will be held on August 26th.

Adding to the 31 male and 24 female athletes present at this 3rd edition of the World University Championship, 25 officials completed the final statistics, totalling 80 participants. The event is also being supervised by a total of 26 international level referees, mostly from Uganda and with one from Indonesia and another from Hong Kong (China). Just over 30 volunteers have been recruited by the LOC to assist in the specific tasks associated to the running of the event, from team attachés to line judges at the competition venues.

This 3rd WUC Woodball is taking place at the Speke Resort in Munyonyo in Kampala, Uganda, set on the shores of Lake Victoria, one of the African Great Lakes – named by the first European to visit the lake, the explorer John Hanning Speke.
