2010 WUC Rowing Update: Final Day & Closing

SZEGED – On August 14^th, after the Finals C and the Finals B were held in the afternoon, a reception was offered by the Hungarian University Sports Federation and the Organizing Committee on the roof of the main building of the competition area at the National Kayak-Canoe and Rowing Olympic Centre, Mayer for all heads of delegations, CISCA members and the jury members. All received a diploma of participation.

On August 15^th, Finals A were held according to schedule, even if the weather forecast showed wind force of 6m/second and direction moving from North wind to South wind, which means slight cross headwind.

Each final was followed by the medal awarding ceremonies. Doping control was also performed.

Directly after the last final competition Senior 8, such as it is the tradition in Rowing, and in order to allow all athletes to take part to this protocol event, the Closing Ceremony was held including the last medal awarding ceremony.

There was no real surprise in the Finals A this morning.

Statistically, according to Lionel Girard, the distribution was made between 17 nations on the 28 participating, and what is really exceptional, is that the medal distribution was made within 4 continents.

Three countries are equalizing in the number of medals won: Italy, Great Britain and Germany, with 5 medals each. On the general ranking, Italy got 3 gold medals and 2 bronze medals. Poland obtained 4 medals of which 2 gold and the title won at the 2008 WUC in Belgrade with double light weight has been kept.

Germany is behind, with 1 gold medal and 4 silver medals. Great Britain is the second in the final ranking, showing, with the victory of the 8, that it is still an excellent rowing nation. It got 2 gold medals and 3 silver medals.

The Closing Ceremony followed in a nice atmosphere on the spot itself, with the closing speech of the President of the Organizing Committee, Attila Bado, and Verena Burk, FISU Assessor, who congratulated the work of the Hungarian University Sports Federation, the Organizing Committee, the Hungarian Rowing Federation, FISA, the jury, the athletes and her colleagues from CISCA.

The flag was handed over to the next Organizing Committee of the 12^th World University Championship in 2012 which will be hosted in Spain. The FISU flag was accepted by the Vice-Rector of the University of Girona, Prof.Dr. Jésus Garcia Gil, who welcomed everybody to attend the 12^th edition of the WUC Rowing in Banyoles. A short promotional video was also shown to all participants.
