2010 WUC Rowing Update: Szeged Ready to Go!

12 August 2010

SZEGED Yesterday, August 11th, the CISCA delegates arrived in Szeged for the World University Rowing Championship. Dr. Verena Burk (GER), FISU Executive Committee delegate; Lionel Girard (FRA), FISU Technical Chair for Rowing; Dr. Zygmunt Przybylski (POL), FISU Medical Committee delegate; Fernando Parente (POR), FISU CIC delegate and Nicole Mangelschots (BEL), FISU WUC Assistant were welcomed by Mr. Csaba Hedi, Hungarian University Sport Federation Secretary-General.

Szeged is a lovely city south of Budapest. In 1879, an exceptional rising of the Tisza flooded the town of Szeged completely. The inhabitants then rebuilt the city according to a completely new plan, in the sun shape and with innovative architectures. The city is in particular famous today for its Hungarian paprika, cultivated in the surroundings.

Szeged is a true University City, which can proudly claim one of the best equipped rowing and canoe-kayak facilities in the world. The Count Istvan Szechenyi Rowing and Kayak-Canoe Olympic Centre is frequently used as the scene of several national and international competitions.

Verena Burk and Nicole Mangelschots had the pleasure to meet the Organising Committee represented by Jozsef Szabo (University of Szeged), Andras Hotvath (Szeged Rowing course director), Eva Szanto (Hungarian confederation of sport) and Zsuzsa Ott (Hungarian Rowing Federation).

They also had the opportunity to check the two accommodation sites in the renovated dormitories of the University and in the city centre.

The site where the Opening Ceremony will be held was also checked: the Szegedi Tudomanyegyetem Jozsef Attila, a newly constructed scientific centre from the University of Szeged.

The day ended by a dinner gathering the Organising Committee represented by Csaba Hedi and Jozsef Szabo and the CISCA delegates.

Tomorrow the CISCA meeting will be held in the morning, followed by practise starts for the competitors, the Jury meeting and inspection course and meeting for the draw of the teams.
