BRAZIL – Brazil, United States, Chile, Colombia, Uruguay and Paraguay will compete from August 9th to 14th the premiere edition of the Pan American Men’s University Basketball Championships 2010.
The city of Salvador (BA) becomes the capital of university basketball in the Americas. The matches will be held in the gymnasium of the Salesian College, located in the neighborhood of Nazareth at Salvador.
In Group A play Brazil, Colombia and Chile and in Group B USA, Paraguay and Uruguay.
In the qualifying round, from August 9th to 11th, the teams face each other in a cross-over competition between the groups. The two top finishers in each pool compete for the semifinals on Friday (August 13th) and the decision of the title, which will be broadcast live by SporTV (Brazilian national TV specialized in sports), is scheduled for Saturday (August 14th), at 12 o’clock.
Brazil and Uruguay play with their national selection. Colombia (with Pontifica Universidad Javeriana) and Chile (with Universidad Catolica de Temuco) bring their national champions representing their countries. And USA will dispute the tournament with South Florida University that plays in the NCAA league.
“The expectation is to have a high level tournament inside and outside the court. We are pleased with the participation of USA, Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay and Colombia and with the Brazilian media attention. We believe this is a first step to consolidation and growing of university basketball in the Americas and to university sport also”, explained Marcelo Falcão, CBDU´s director and president of the Organizing Committee.
The Pan-American University Basketball Championship is an achievement of Brazilian University Sport Confederation (CBDU) in partnership with the Pan-American University Sports Confederation (ODUPA) and Koch Tavares.
