2010 WUC Bridge Update: WBF President praises FISU

4 August 2010

KAOSHIUNG – José Damiani, President of the World Bridge Federation praised FISU for its collaboration with WBF to promote bridge.

‘The World Bridge Federation is very proud to cooperate with FISU in the organisation of the 5th World University Bridge Championship. I would like to stress that one of our main concerns for the development and future of bridge is that students should learn and enjoy our wonderful sport. Events like this, where you can come together in a spirit of competition and friendship, are so important and I am sure that you will all make the most of the opportunity offered to you during these Championships. I would like to congratulate FISU for once again organising the event, and thank them and all the organisers – perhaps especially our bridge friends in the Chinese Taipei Contract Bridge Association – for all their hard work which I know will be appreciated by all the participants in this marvelous city of Kaohsiung. The Chairman of the University Bridge Committee Geert Magerman, also deserves our gratitude as well for everything he has done through the years, serving you all by working closely with FISU and the WBF. I wish you all a successful and enjoyable Championship.’

Quotes at the 5th WUC Bridge

LIU Zhi-hao (Howard) (USA)

‘I played bridge since I entered to college in 2004. At first, I was just playing bridge with my friends for fun, and developed the bridge as my interest gradually. This is my first time to take part in international championship, and I expect to play with Poland, France and the host country Chinese Taipei.’

Cristina GIAMPIETRO (GER)

‘I loved playing card games because of my mother, she taught me how to play bridge, but she isn’t a very good bridge player actually. I have lots of same characters with my mother, so I guess that is why I am crazy about bridge.’

Yena WIRAHMA (INA)

‘I loved playing card games since I was a child. But in my childhood, I knew nothing about bridge at all. I learned about bridge when I entered to college, and I joined the bridge club in school in 2004.’
