2010 WUC Bridge Update: Opening Ceremony

 Opening Ceremony

 

KAOHSIUNG – The 5th World University Bridge Championship which takes place every two years, has begun on August 2, 2010 in National Sun Yat-sen University in Kaohsiung, Chinese Taipei.

The opening ceremony of this tournament took place today, August 3rd. All the participating players from 10 countries met and communicated with each other for the first time. FISU Assessor Kim Chong Yang awarded three trophies of commemoration to the highest authorities, the Sports Affairs Council, the Chinese Taipei University Sports Federation (organizing committee) and the host city – Kaohsiung.

The superiors of this convention all expected the Bridge players will promote international exchanges in the bridge community.

The Deputy Mayor of Kaohsiung city, Yung-Te Lee represented the Kaohsiung City Mayor, Chen Chu to present the best wishes for the success of this tournament and for the joy and happiness of all in attendance. Yung-Te Lee also recommended all the participants would travel around the beautiful Kaohsiung city.

Dr. Kunning Chen, the President of Chinese Taipei University Sports Federation indicated that we used to consider some physical activities like basketball, baseball, wrestling, etc. as sports. Some sports, though being mental ones, are also sports. Bridge, for example, is one of such sports different from physical activities.

Hung-Duen Yang, the President of National Sun Yat-sen University expressed that this competition is an opportunity for all the players to test their physical strength and intelligence as well as a Platform for international sport exchanges.

After the speeches of the distinguished guests and the oath of the athletes, judges and referees, students of the department of music in National Sun Yat-sen University played a series of pleasant music.

 

 

In the next 6 days, 72 players from 10 countries will take part in this championship.

In all of the countries, the most starring team is the host ─ Chinese Taipei , the Chinese Taipei’s players are almost all from National Taiwan University and were the winner of Taiwanese bridge competition. The most players of Chinese Taipei is from the department of technical, they all expect that they can share the experience of playing bridge with players from other countries.

‘Actually I don’t. But I am considering that a bridge game takes 2 hours and keeps high tense. I need to pay more concentration on it, so I think there has different quality of wisdom and strength between bridge and other sports.’
