2012 WUC Beach Volleyball: Update

MACEIO – Maceió starts to get into the mood of the FISU World University Championship. The city will host the 6^th World University Beach Volleyball Championship in 2012. Luciano Cabral, President of the Brazilian University Sports Confederation (CBDU) and FISU Vice-President, gave to mayor Cicero Almeida the FISU flag and the document that guarantees the capital of Alagoas the attribution of the event.

Cicero Almeida received on Thursday (29/07), in his office, Luciano Cabral, Alim Maluf, secretary-general of CBDU and Andre Matos, CBDU technical director, who presented the technical project proposals for the implementation of the World University Beach Volleyball in Maceió.

André Mattos led the Brazilian delegation at the 2010 World University Beach Volleyball Championship in Alanya, Turkey, last June, and watched the tournament structure to improve the design of the next event in Maceió.

Cicero Almeida agreed and assured support for the project development by strengthening the city’s potential to host international events and receive athletes from around the world. “Maceió is with doors open to receive the university sports community”, he said. “We have the possibility to realize a historical event in Maceio and a tournament of excellent technical quality. The city of Maceió is a permanent headquarters of the Brazilian Circuit of beach volleyball and athletes from the city constantly represent Brazil in selections. That’s why the city is a hotbed of National Beach Volleyball”, added André Mattos.

Cícera de Oliveira, president of Alagoas University Sports Federation (FADU), Eduardo Canuto, municipal secretary of sports in Maceió, Claudia Pessoa, municipal secretary of Tourism, and Marcelo Firmino, communications secretary, also attended the meeting at City Hall.

This year, Brazilian’s athletes who were at the WUC Beach Volleyball in Turkey guaranteed the best result of the country in the tournament. Luciano and Vinicius conquered the 4th place overall and teams Fabi and Julia and Raphael and Philippe ended fifth. And the expectation, playing at home in 2012, is to reach the podium at the 6^th edition of the World University Championship.
