2010 WUC Rugby 7s Update: WUC Rugby Sevens Starts Strongly

23 July 2010

PORTO – The first teams to make their debut in the 4th WUC Rugby 7s were Poland and Russia. On the one hand, the Russian national team reinforced the ambition to be in the Final Cup of the 4th World University Championship of Sevens winning for 47-0. On the other hand, the Polish team, despite the defeat, adopted a relaxed position saying humorously that “the beauty of the Portuguese women and the sun were the reasons for their distraction”.

Afterwards Belgium played against Italy, in a very competitive game that ended up with the victory of the Belgian national team (14 – 5). Chinese Taipei won against the Lebanese 24 – 7 that got seven points through a Frederik Marklou´s sprint.

Great-Britain won Hungary for 52-0 and Canada followed their footsteps winning against Norway 45-0.

Closing male games, Japan defeated Morocco 29-12, a game full of sprints and individual plays for each team. One of the Moroccan players commented with a teammate that “Japan is faster” while “Moroccan game style is based on strength”.

The female teams’ games highlights for this day started with a victory of the Canadian over Guam 55-0.

The Portuguese victory over Italy (19-0) pleased the Portuguese public. It was possible, during this game, to see that in the female competition the Portuguese team also “came to win” showing that “rugby isn’t a manly sport”.

Many supporters got attracted by this WUC championship. Most of them said that this World Championship is being interesting so far. The supporters also referred that “a good choice was made in terms of location”. In fact, “Porto is fantastic”.
