2010 WUC Orienteering Update: Day 2 of Competitions

21 July 2010

 Jerker Lysell

BORLANGE – The sprint is the latest addition amongst the different distances in orienteering. And the latest addition to the Swedish senior national team is a sprint specialist.

Jerker Lysell, remember that name. After a successful time as a junior, his name is now also in the history books as a gold medalist in the greater contexts, thanks to his victory in today’s sprint in the World University Orienteering Championship – faster than the well established runners Scott Fraser (UK) and Jan Prochazka (CZR) . ‘It feels good with a positive answer after the sprint, especially with the World Championships in Trondheim coming up. I did a little wrong turn right in the beginning, but after that it all went well’, says Lysell, who won gold in the sprint race – 8.5 seconds faster than Scott Fraser (UK) and 27 seconds faster than Severin Howald (SUI) at third place.

Lysell, who lives and study machine engineering in Borlänge, is originally from Bollnäs and competes for the Bollnäs club Rehns BK. This Summer, however, he has switched his orange blue Rehns shirt for the Swedish national team shirt – not only during the World University Championship, where he runs sprint, middle distance and relay, but also during the “big” IOF World Championship in the middle of August. What distances he will run in the World Championship is yet to be decided, but after today’s accomplishments the sprint is very likely to be considered when the national team manager Marita Skogum selects the team after next week’s “O-ringen” competitions in Örebro. ‘Of course it was fun to win today, but in the World Championship I will focus even harder to make sure that everything will work out. I am not one hundred percent satisfied with all the details today’, the new sprint World Champion finishes.

The women’s sprint race was won by Anelie Chataing (FRA)whereas silver went to Swiss Caroline Cejka and bronze to Michaela Guizzardi from Italy.
