19 July 2010

CISCA Meeting

BORLANGE (SWE) – As it is already well known in the “orienteering family” around the world the 17th edition of World University Orienteering Championship will take place in Borlange, Sweden from July 19th to 23rd. This 17th edition has already had very successful previous editions with the 1st being hosted in Jyvaskyla, Finland in 1978. This current edition is held in Sweden for the second time since 1984. This year’s event is hosted by the Swedish University Sports Federation (SUSF) in cooperation with the Municipality of the city Borlange, situated 200km north west from Stockholm. This is SUSF’s second WUC this year as it previously this May staged the 4th WUC Floorball in Umea.

Yesterday, July 18th, the CISCA meeting took place to discuss all necessary topics concerning transportation, accommodation, media, medical care and all aspects regarding protocol issues and technical arrangements. On behalf of FISU, CISCA Chair and FISU EC member Mrs. Kairis ULP (EST) thanked the Organizing Committee and SUSF for the overall preparation of the event.

Mr. Christer LOFAS (SWE), Director of WUOC and Coordinator of the event, recalled the huge experience of the OC from many international events. He also stressed the big help and support by Municipality of the city by Mayor Mr. Nils PERSSON.

Mrs. Johana S:t CLAIR (SWE), President of the OC and President of SUSF assured all CISCA members that this event will give to all an unforgettable experience in Sweden, because orienteering is a sport with a great mentality of “No Problems” and the participants are ‘easy going’. This National and Local organization is providing a good strategy for future legacy of the Swedish University Sports Federation. This 17th edition will set a record in number of participating countries – 31 (AUS, BLR, LTU, UKR, AUT, CZE, DEN, BUL, CAN, ESP, IRL, ISR, EST, FIN, FRA, GBR, GER, HUN, ITA, CHN, LAT, JPN, MDA, NOR, NZL, POL, SUI, RUS, SWE, SVK, USA).

FISU Technical Chair for Orienteering Mr. Ola KABERG (SWE) confirmed the very good technical part of the preparation and emphasized that this competition will be very tough comparing to other events. This region was already in ongoing preparation from 2003 when for the 1st time Ola KABERG paid a technical visit over here. As he mentioned the good cooperation with the OC is the basis for success and it was conducted since this WUC was attributed to Borlange.

The competition program will start on Tuesday (July 20) in Long distance, Wednesday (July 21) in Sprint, Thursday (July 22) in Middle distance, Friday (July 23) in Relay competition.

Also present at this championship is IOF representative Mr. Bjorn PERSSON (SWE), who is responsible for World Cup in IOF and IOF advisor Mr. Bernt O.MYRVOLD (NOR).

Mr. Arie ROSENZWEIG (ISR), CIC member of FISU informed all CISCA members that already 20 countries and almost 200 people were accredited. The estimate number is 313 participants (143 men, 119 women, 51 officials).

All participants are accommodated in the nice hotel SCANDIC in the centre of Borlange. Dr. José Luis TERREROS informed the OC and CISCA members about the good medical services that will be delivered to all participants in case of needed medical assistance during this event. The OC has at the disposal medical crew with all facilities in Borlange and Falun if necessary.
