2010 WUC Karate Update: Day 1 of Competitions

Opening Ceremony

PODGORICA – The Seventh World University Karate Championship officially started with the opening ceremony in sports center Moraca in Podgorica. This championship is the biggest competition, which is organized by the University Sports Federation of Montenegro. 44 countries, about 360 athletes and 130 officials participate in the seventh edition of this FISU event.

Before the grand opening the Organizing Committee organized a welcome cocktail for the chefs de mission. During this cocktail Mr. Douvis, FISU EC Member presented the Minister of Education of Montenegro Mr. Stijepovic a FISU commemorative plaque.

The Opening Ceremony was attended by the FISU representatives, as well as the ambassadors of the countries in Montenegro. Mr. Douvis delivered a welcome speech to the delegations on behalf of the FISU President and wished all participants a successful and fair championship. Minister of Education Slavoljub Stijepovic officially opened the championship. A cultural program followed the official part of the opening ceremony, where traditional and modern dances were presented to the spectators.

The first day of competition brought Japan the most medals, one gold in Kata individual female and three bronze medals in Kata individual male, female kumite -50kg and female kumite -55kg.
