Battling Cancer at Northern University Games

6 July 2010

TOOWOOMBA – Australian Catholic University (ACU) students will be out in force on Tuesday at the 2010 Northern University Games in Toowoomba, as they support the Cancer Council’s ‘Call to Arms’ campaign.

‘Call To Arms’ started in 2006 when Essendon Football Club showed their support for teammate Adam Ramanauskas, who was diagnosed with cancer, by wearing yellow armbands in the first ‘Clash For Cancer’ match against Melbourne Football Club.

Since then, sporting clubs across Australia have joined the cause and wear yellow for one game during the month of July to help in the fight against cancer.

ACU Team Manager Mark Young says, “This is a new community initiative for our teams and we are very proud of our students for getting behind this great cause.

In particular the ACU Netball and Lawn Bowls teams will be leading the charge and donning the yellow, with the remaining ACU teams following suit.

Mr Young also notes that ACU are not limiting this action to the Northern University Games.

“Our students at the corresponding Eastern and Southern University Games will also be participating in this initiative.

“Our teams will show their support in more ways than just the arm bands, with some sides wearing yellow playing shorts and others swapping out shoelaces and socks to take on the yellow theme.”

Games Project Coordinator Paul Sutcliffe encouraged all universities to get behind this, and other, great community initiatives.

“It is wonderful to see university students getting involved in bigger community issues whilst participating at AUS events”.
