VIGO – The second last day of the World University Taekwondo Championship in Vigo saw the Men’s -68 kg and -74 kg, together with the Woman’s -57 kg and -62 kg.
For the first time in the history of FISU World University Championships, electronic body protectors are being used. The first time this was used by the World Taekwondo Federation was at the World Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark in 2009. The revised Competition Rules and the instant video replay system are now in use at FISU taekwondo events, together with the new scoring system (a head-kick is worth three points).
In the men’s -68 kg weight category, Seon UK Kim from Korea beat Aleksiy Avsadzhanishvili from Russia in the final by 8-1. The bronze medals went to Wardell Samotshozo from USA and Abbas Sheikhi from Iran.
The men’s -74kg Gold medal went to Russian Albert Gaun, their first in this championship that beat Hyun Kim from Korea. The bronze medals went to Eduardo Rodrigues (Portugal) and Sari Yunnus (Turkey).
The female -57kg saw gold go to Pei-Hua Tseng from Chinese Taipei) and silver to Hye Rin Cho from Korea. The bronze medals went to Katarzyna Wieczorek (Poland) and Zeynep Kirez (Turkey).
In the Women’s-62KG, Sun Young Jun from Korea took the World University title, beating Nina Klaey from Switzerland in an over-time victory. The home athlete Estefania Hernández García (Spain) and Helene Weingart (Germany) were bronze medals.
The final day will see the men’s -63 kg and -80 kg, and women’s -53 kg and -67 kg weight categories, followed by the closing ceremony of the 11th World University Taekwondo Championship.
