VIGO – The first World University Champions in kyorugi were crowned in the Women’s -49kg and +73kg, as well as Men’s -58kg and +87kg.
In the Gold medal fight for the Women’s -49kg category, Yang Shu-Chun from Chinese Taipei beat Mavi Sevde from Turkey by 10-0. The bronze medals were awarded to Myeong Suk Park from Korea and Van Thi Kim Thu from Vietnam.
The men’s -58kg competition was tough and all opponents were of a high level. The World and European Champion, Joel Gonzalez Bonilla from Spain beat Ruslan Poiseev from Russia for the gold medal by 14-1. This way, Joel added the World University title to his European University title earned at the 1st EUC Taekwondo, held last year in Braga (Portugal). The bronze medals went to Cristiano Valeriano da Silva (Brazil) and Yacizi Recep (Turkey).
Spain won another gold medal in the women’s +73kg with Alamo Rosanna Simón beating Yongtong Zhang from China in the final by 8-3. The bronze medals went to Maeva Mellier from France and Moon Ju Lee from Korea.
In the final fight of the day, the men’s +87kg gold medal went to Sauquet Robelis Despaigne from Cuba. In a very exciting match, the Cuban beat Fernández Mikel Bernal from Spain by 6-3 despite the very loud support from the home crowd. Beom Cheon Park (Korea) and John Kimmich (USA) where awarded the bronze medals.
