NYIREGYHAZA – On the third day of the 20th World University Handball Championship both Hungarian teams had a day off. However, other exciting games were played, since the major opponents played against each other.
The situation in the women’s round robin tournament is such that the Hungarian women are well positioned, having played only two games but scoring four points, the same as the top team of the group, the Czechs, who have played three games until now. Since the Czech team lost to Romania and Turkey beat Japan, there are four teams at this moment with four points.
In Pool A of the men’s tournament Serbia beat Poland, in a vital game they had to win if they wished to reach the podium, having only drawn against Cyprus the previous day. The second match of Pool A was between Cyprus and the United Arab Emirates, which Cyprus won comfortably.
In Pool B the biggest surprise of the third day came with a tough game between the last tournament’s fourth place winner Turkey and Mexico. Turkey won the game by one goal in the last minute. The other game in this pool was played between Czech Republic and Japan. The Czechs were comfortable at the half time with a ten goal difference. The Japanese fought back in the second half but still lost by six goals.
