BRASILIA – In the next decade, Brazil will host a number of major international sporting events: the World Military Games in 2011, the FIFA Soccer World Cup in 2014 and the Olympic Summer Games in 2016.
To guarantee that Brazil develops into a world sports power and to avoid that the country becomes a hostage of these major events, the 3rd edition of the Brazilian National Sports Conference had as its central theme the ‘Ten Year Plan for Sport and Recreation’: 10 points in 10 years to project Brazil among the top 10 of sport nations in the world. The Conference was held in Brasilia (DF), from June 3rd to 6th.
In this perspective, University Sport is an essential tool to sports promotion and to discover new Olympic talents. And the Brazilian University Sports Confederation (CBDU), through its President, Luciano Cabral, actively participated in the Organizing Committee of the Conference and for that received a tribute from the Minister of Sports Orlando Silva.
“Public policy in medium and long terms to promote social inclusion, healthy sports and high performance passes through university, where the young are. That’s why CBDU was determined to participate in this discussion and get more space for athletics, even thinking of closing this round of sporting events with the return of the Universiade to Brazil in 2017 or 2019”, Luciano Cabral said.
The Brazilian’s President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva opened the National Sports Conference and pointed out the importance of sports in youth formation and for the construction of a better Brazil.
More than 220,000 people in 3,000 cities throughout Brazil attended the events in preparation of the Conference that generated the proposals and issues to be discussed and voted at the national plenary session in Brasilia.
