Brazil, Chile and Colombia Victorious at 2010 South American University Games

Brazil won the volleyball tournament

Five countries, three sports disciplines disputed, over 200 people involved, including athletes, coaches, officials and organizing committee. This is the balance of the III South American University Games, staged in Curitiba (PR), from April 18th to 22nd.

Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Paraguay and Uruguay competed in the 2010 edition of the South American University Games in the following disciplines: football, tennis and volleyball (men).

After five days of competitions, trophies went to Colombia, Brazil and Chile. The Brazilians celebrated their third championship title in volleyball as well as medals of gold and silver in tennis singles. Colombia won the championship trophy in football. And the Chileans got 1st place in tennis doubles.

BRA vs. CHI“Once more we just have to celebrate the achievements in and out of court in this latest edition of the South American University Games, such as the possibilities of technical and cultural exchange between young athletes and the strengthening of South American university sport federations. Congratulations to everyone: athletes, coaches, managers and partners”, said Alim Maluf Neto, President of the Confederation of South American University Sports (COSUD).

Tennis – Brazil, Chile and Colombia stood out in tennis competition at Graciosa Country Club. At the end of the doubles event the Chileans Carlos Javier and Alejandro Ibañes beat Colombia’s team Harold Montoya and Jose Aristizabal. The singles competition ended in a Brazilian final between the players Valter Mori and Luis Deneke. Mori scored 2-0 and got the gold medal. Javier and Ibañes, from Chile, won the bronze medals.

Volleyball – In Círculo Militar gymnasium, Brazil and Chile played the final of the volleyball tournament. Unoesc (SC) team kept the Brazilian hegemony and won the third South American trophy by scoring 3-0 against Chile. Colombia completed the podium with a 3-0 victory against Paraguay.

Colombia won the football trophyFootball – In Pinhão stadium there was a surprise at the football tournament. Colombia beat Uruguay, South American champions in 2006, and Brazil, playing home, and won the champion’s trophy. Colombian team had the best campaign with two wins and two draws. Uruguay and Chile completed the podium.

Meeting – The leaders of South American University Sport Federations present in Curitiba took the Games to meet and deal with administrative issues and the upcoming tournaments and events of COSUD. Julio Jakob, President of ODUPA, also attended the event and followed the competitions.

The South American University Games is an accomplishment of COSUD and this year had the support of the Brazilian University Sports Confederation (CBDU) and Paraná government and University Sports Federation.
