2011 WU: Venue Construction Update

The construction works in Erzurum, Turkey, host of the 2011 Winter Universiade are in full swing. An overview.

1. Curling Rink for 1,000 Spectators

The structural work is about to be completed. In 15-20 days, frame-roofing installation and covering will be started. Mr. Leif OHMAN, WCF Technical Expert, visited Erzurum on 13 August 2009 and inspected the construction on site. Mr. Ohman stated his positive views and mentioned that the construction proceeded faster.

2. Ice Skating Rink for 500 Spectators

The construction work continues in accordance with the work plan.

3. Ice Hockey Rinks for 3,000 and 500 Spectators

The structural work of the 500-spectator ice-hockey rink planned to be used for the Women’s Ice Hockey competition is completed. At the moment, frame-roofing installation is carried out and covering will start shortly. Four more changing rooms were added in this 500-spectator rink, and the number of the total changing rooms is 12 now. The structural work of the 3,000-spectator ice hockey rink is about to be completed as well. Frame-roofing will be installed.

4. Construction of the Jumping Towers

The structural work of the 125 K tower, the 95 K tower, the judge tower, the media centre for 100 persons and the spectator tribune continues. Moreover, armored concrete works of the 25 wax cabins continue.

5. Conditions of the Constructions in Kandilli, Konaklı and Palandöken Regions

5.1 Kandilli Region (Nordic Combined – Biathlon)

The construction of permanent venues in the Kandilli Region is about to be completed. Track works are already completed. The competition area is getting prepared to be used for competition. The tender for the artificial snow making system is completed. It will be produced by the company Tekno Alpin.

5.2 Konaklı Region (Ski Region)

Slope arrangements continue. The constructions of 4 lifts are in progress by the companies to which the contracts were awarded.

5.3. Construction of the Permanent Buildings in the Palandöken Region

The construction of the permanent buildings will start shortly. The 3 lift constructions are in progress. Construction of the artificial snow system is in progress. Slope style of freestyle is about to be completed, and the slope style of half-pipe and snowboard for competitions is in progress.

6. Project Preparation of the Ponds

Project preparation of the ponds was completed. Regarding their construction tenders;

Kandilli Region: The pond production tender was done on July 7th, 2009, tender process continues.

Konaklı Region: The tender will be opened on August 25th, 2009.

Palandöken Region: The tender works still continue.

7. Area for the Opening Ceremony, MPC and IBC Centers

The project work for maintenance, restoration and amendment of Cemal Gürsel Stadium started and is in progress.

 

HOMOLOGATION AND APPROVAL PROCESS

1. Curling Rink for 1,000 spectators

Leif OHMAN, WCF Technical expert, visited Erzurum on August 13th, 2009 and inspected the construction on site. Mr. Ohman was very possitive.

2. Ski Jumping and Free Style Skiing

FIS registration work was carried out from August 2nd to 5th, 2009 in Erzurum by Mr. Richard KAISER (Ski jumping) and Mr. Joseph FITZGERALD (Free Style Skiing).

3. Homologation of Snowboard competition area

Mr. Peter KROGOLL visited Erzurum from June 21st to 25th 2009 for the homologation of the snowboard competition area.

 

TRAINING AND PROGRESS SEMINARS

1. Curling

4 ice technicians, 3 technical directors and 3 judges participated in the seminar held by the World Curling Federation from June 27th to July 4th, 2009 in Füssen, Germany.

Moreover, 1 observer participated in the training course held by the WCF from July 5th to 11th, 2009 in Obersdorf, Germany.

2. Ice Skating

One person participated in the technical controller seminar held by the ISU from July 12th to 18th, 2009 in Frankfurt, Germany. Furthermore, 2 persons participated in the technical specialization seminar from July 12th to 18th, 2009.
