In 2010, the NUSF of Montenegro, one of FISU youngest member associations, will stage its first ever World University Championship. The new nation surprised everybody in 2007 when its men’s water polo team grabbed the Universiade gold in Bangkok. With the organization of the 7th World University Karate Championship, Montenegro confirms the active role it wants to play in international university sports.
Pearl of the Mediterranean
Montenegro – the pearl of the Mediterranean, unique in many ways, is situated in the south of the Adriatic. There is nowhere else that you can find, in such a small place, so much natural wealth, beauty, mild beaches, clear lakes, fast rivers and gorgeous mountains – like you can in the small country of Montenegro. In the morning you can wake up along the beautiful Adriatic coast, have lunch on the banks of Skadar Lake, and enjoy the evening walks in the Montenegrin Mountains. Montenegro is a place that cannot leave you indifferent.
Montenegro is certainly one of the most interesting spots in the world. Even though it covers solely around 14,000 km2 and it only has about 670,000 citizens, its contribution to the world cultural heritage is impressive comparing its size … Montenegro is a southern European and a Mediterranean country. It is one of the most southern European states and it comes out on the south part of the Adriatic Sea. About 500km from Rome, 1.500 km from Paris, and Berlin, and about 2.000km west from Moscow, Montenegro lies on the Balkan Peninsula in the very heart of Europe.
Podgorica
Podgorica became the capital of Montenegro in 1945. Not only are the Government and Parliament located here, but the city is also the economic, cultural, social, educational, and sports centre with important faculties of the university and theatres. Many companies have located their headquarters in Podgorica. To fulfill all these demands it was necessary to rebuild the city, which was completely destroyed in World War II.
Podgorica was founded more than 2,000 years ago. Even today one can still follow the footsteps of the Romans, who built the town of Doclea here. While Doclea served as the headquarters for the Emperor of the Prevalis province, Byrziminium, just a few kilometers south, had more the character of a trading post.
During the 9th century immigrant Slavs came into power in the region. They founded the town and state of Duklja in the area of Byrziminiums. In their Golden Age they were ruling over the Zeta and Moraca valleys, the region around Lake Skadar and parts of the coast. The Turks turned Podgorica, which was its name since 1474, into a real fortress. They stayed until 1879. In 1946, after the creation of Yugoslavia, the town was named Titograd. In 1992 it got its old name back, Podgorica, which literally means “under Gorica” (Gorica – the name of the hill that overlooks the centre of the city).
The FISU event will be staged in Podgorica, which has been host to a great number of international karate events, i.e.:
– 1st Mediterranean Karate Championship (1987);
– Senior Karate European Championship (1989);
– 1st European University Karate Championship (2003);
– 12th Mediterranean Karate Championship (2003);
– 33rd European Karate Championship for Cadets and Juniors (2006).
– 3rd European University Karate Championship (2007)
Accommodation
All delegations will be accommodated in the student dormitories of the University of Montenegro. The accommodation is about 2km from the center of Podgorica and 1km from Sports Center Moraca. Access to the accommodation centre will be possible only with an accreditation card. Different types of meals (min 3) will be served including vegetarian ones.
Transportation
The delegations will be transferred from Podgorica Airport, Podgorica Buss and Railway station to the accommodation by the Organizing Committee according to the received travel schedules. For departure of the delegations, the same process will be followed. The OC will provide shuttle buses from accommodation venue to the sport venue and back.
Medical Assistance
The OC will provide full medical assistance to all delegation members from 12th to 19th July. During the Championship medical assistance according WKF rules will be provided.
