2009 SU Update: Two More Universiade Records and a Very Fast 200m in Athletics

11 July 2009

Yesterday, July 10th, the Ramil Guliyev from Armenia surprised everybody winning the men’s 200m in a superb 20.4 seconds, nearing the 2004 Junior World Record from Jamaican sprint star Usian Bolt (19.93). ‘I’m extremely happy, what else can I say’, Rami said.

Hammer thrower Betty Haidler from Germany set a new Universiade record with 75.83 m. ‘This was a very long competition with lots of interruptions, but I’m very happy with my result’, the former 2007 World Champion said. ‘The competition was fierce, which made me appreciate my victory even more. I got used to Belgrade easily because the climate is similar to Germany, but I did have trouble adapting to the food, since it’s very different from ours’, the German athlete said.

Portuguese Sara Moreira is unstoppable. Yesterday she set a new time for the women’s steeple chase (9:32.62) and today she neared the 5,000m record of her compatriot Jessica Augosto (15:28.78) clocking a 15:32.78.

‘I’m thrilled with my result. I’m preparing for the IAAF World Championship in Rome, but I also wanted to harvest the gold in Belgrade and check my physical readiness’, the double gold medallist said. ‘I had trouble getting used to the climate and the food, since it is completely different from Portuguese cuisine.’
