2009 SU Update: Serbian Volleyball Team Starts Preparations

16 June 2009

Yesterday, the Serbian volleyball team has begun its preparations for the Universiade Belgrade 2009, due to start on July 1st.

The chief coach Dragan Djordjevic, together with assistant coach Dragan Bonic, has made the first roll call. Twelve players were present in M hotel yesterday: setters – Stefanovic and Cubrilo; opposite hitters – Atanasijevic and Mrdak; outside hitters – Bjelica, Vemic, Terzic and Petric; middle blockers – Radevic, Rasic, Cedic and libero Ilic. After their return from Korea, they will be joined by Tomislav Djokic and Borislav Petrovic. Therefore, spectators in Belgrade, Novi Sad and Smederevo will be able to watch a strong Serbian national volleyball team.

‘This is the first time for me to play for the University volleyball team. I am glad that I was given the opportunity to play at such a big sports event as the Universiade. The fact that we are the host country provides added motivation. All major volleyball national teams will come to Serbia. In our group, the most serious opponents are Russia and Korea; however, we must not underestimate other teams’, Milos Vemic said, who has already completed a part of his training with the Serbian senior team.

Present at the first training match of the Serbian University volleyball team last night at Pionir sports hall were the three players from the A team: Ivan Miljkovic, Andrija Geric and Marko Podrascanin. Miljkovic and Geric missed the trip to Korea; however, Podrascanin will most certainly join the team. The young team members, some of which train for the first time with their former idols, will have the chance to learn a lot from the more experienced players.
