1st Pan-Am University Taekwondo Championship

10 June 2009

On May 28-29, the University of California Martial Arts Program hosted the 1st Pan-Am University Taekwondo Championship at the University of California at Berkeley campus. It was the first Pan-Am University Sports event hosted by the “Organización Deportiva Universitaria Panamericana” (ODUPA), the American Continental Member Association of FISU.

Seven countries signed up for the event but, due to economic hardship, swine flu, and time conflicts, four countries could not make their trip to Berkeley. However, USA, Canada, and Guyana participated in the event, with USA winning 16 Gold and 5 Silver; Canada winning 4 Gold and 8 Silver; and Guyana winning 1 Gold medal.

Despite the lack of participating countries, the level of technique was high since more than 70% of the athletes were national team members and will compete again at the 25th Universiade Game in Belgrade this summer. Both athletes and spectators were very excited about the high level competition. In addition, the team from Korea University was invited to support the event and engaged in friendly matches with USA, Canada, and Guyana following the official events. Audiences and officials enjoyed the outstanding matches and fine Taekwondo techniques.

The 2nd Pan-Am University Taekwondo Championship will no doubt be just as exciting, and will likely grow to include more participating countries.
