2009 SU Update: New Rule for Volleyball Tournaments at Universiade

15 May 2009

At the volleyball tournaments at the 2009 Universiade in Belgrade, FISU, with the assistance of the FIVB (International Volleyball Federation), will test and evaluate a new volleyball rule, currently on approval for future volleyball tournaments.

Sandy Steel, the president of the FIVB Rules Commission, has proposed a new rule “four players in one position” that will be tried during the men’s and women’s volleyball tournaments at the Universiade in Belgrade.

This rule allows four players to play in the same position during one set as opposed to two players playing in one position previously. The proposal also says that the number of substitutions is increased from the current six to twelve. A player who begins the match can leave the game and return to it only once during a set and play in the starting position.

More info about the testing of the new rules at the 25th Summer Universiade Belgrade 2009 can be found at: http://www.ossrb.org/main/UB2009_New Rule.pdf
