Round-Up 2009 WU Ice Hockey Tournament – Day 5

22 February 2009

Packed to the roof: CAN vs. CHN Women’s Ice Hockey

Women

JPN – SVK 1-4 (1-2, 0-1, 0-1)
Hardly two minutes into the game, Slovakia opened the score via Velickova. Halfway the period, Japan took advantage of a powerplay and Shimozawa put the equalizer in the nets. A few minutes later, Slovakia retaliated and also scored a powerplay goal. The second period the Slovaks took Team Nippon by surprise, drilling the black biscuit past goalie Eri Kiribuchi hardly 30 seconds after the drop of the puck. The third period the Japanese missed a lot of powerplay opportunities, whereas the Slovaks scored their fourth goal via Karafiatova in the last 20 seconds of the game.

GBR – FIN 0-16 (0-5, 0-6, 0-5)
Few words to say. Shots on the British goal: 101, shots on the Finish goal: 0. Great Britain was simply outclassed in this game, which merely took place in their defensive zone.

CAN – CHN 7-1 (2-1, 1-0, 4-0)
The game between top contender Canada and host China was very much anticipated. With the Harbin Ice Hockey Gym packed to the roof the Chinese fans kept boosting for their team chanting ‘Zhong Guo! Zhong Guo!’ – China! China! … but the Canadians were no match for the Chinese. Five minutes into the game Canada opens the score via Unruh. Halfway through the period China can collect on a powerplay and Jiang scores the equalizer. The teams leave the ice for the first time after Copeland from Canada has put a two on the scoreboard. In the second there is a lot of two-way hockey where China misses some opportunities. Canada doesn’t and Provost scores number three for the Leaf. In the third period Team China gives a tired impression, but not the Canadians. They keep on going strong and drill four more goals past Chinese goalie Shi Yao.
