Round-up 2009 WU Ice Hockey Tournament – Day 4

21 February 2009

CAN vs. SVK

Women

GBR – JPN 1-8 (0-1, 1-6, 0-1)
Although the weaker team in the tournament, the Brits stayed breathing in the neck of their Japanese opponents trailing only by one point in the first period. In the second, Japan took a distance scoring six other goals in a row putting a 7-0 on the scoreboard. And then it happened, Turner scored a goal for Great Britain in the last minute of the period. In the last period Iwahara scored one more goal for Team Nippon to bring the score to 1-8 in favor of the Japanese.

 CAN – SVK 6-3 (1-2, 3-1, 2-0)
An over confident and by moments sloppy Canada was shaken awake when Slovakia ended the first period with a 1-2 lead. A thunder speech from the coach during the first break and the Canadian Women picked up their pace again and drilled 3 more goals passed Slovak goalie Monika Kvakova. With only one goal difference after the second the game could still go either ways. A lot of pressure from both teams on the goalies resulted in a number of penalties. With less than three minutes to go, Hottot scored another goal for Canada, slimming down the chances for Slovakia to equalize the score. With 58:55 on the clock, Provost took away all Slovak hopes and settled the score of the game, a 6-3 victory for Team Canada. The game was attended by FISU President Killian.

FIN – CHN 2-3 (1-1, 1-1, 0-1)
In front of a sold-out ice arena, Team China beat Team Finland in a real thriller. Ending the first two periods with equal scores put the pressure on both teams until the very end of the game. And then, Jin Fenling revealed herself as the hero of the day, scoring the winning goal for China. No need to say, the crowd went crazy.

Men

CAN – GBR 11-2 (3-0, 5-0, 3-2)
While the GBR Women were defeated by Japan, the Men lost the ‘Commonwealth Clash’ against Canada. Although trying to cling on to the Canadians, the Brits played a fairly good game as they kept going. After a dip in the second, the Brits played an outstanding last period putting a 3-2 on the score sheet. It has to be said, the Boys from Albion have improved since Torino 2007.

KAZ – CZE 5-2 (2-1, 3-0, 0-1)
The encounter between Kazakhstan and the Czech Republic was a tight game, which resulted in a lot of trips to the penalty box for both sides. Kazakhstan took the lead in the first period and never looked back resulting in a 5-2 lead.
