CHN vs. JPN: a tight game

WOMEN

SVK – GBR 8-1 (0-0, 6-0, 2-1)
Slovakia completely dominated its opponent in Game 4 of the Women’s Ice Hockey Tournament of the 2009 Winter Universiade in Harbin, China. Notwithstanding, the Brits managed to keep an equal 0-0 on the scoreboard during the first period. In the second, all hell broke loose and the Slovak Women scored six times. In the third, Slovakia added another goal but hardly two minutes later Wiggins scored the first goal for Albion on assist of Butcher. With six minutes to go, Jurcova scored another goal for Slovakia bringing the score to 8-1.

CHN – JPN 2-3 (0-1, 1-0, 1-1, 0-0, 0-1)
Game 5 saw an Asian clash between host China and rival Japan. In front of a near full capacity crowd of 2,500 in the Harbin Ice Hockey Gym, both teams played an intense and high-paced game which ended in a tie after regular playing time. After a scoreless overtime, Japan won pocketed the game with penalty shots.

CAN – FIN 5-0 (0-0, 0-0, 5-0)
A highly anticipated game between Finland and Canada saw an upsetting and scoreless game until almost the second half of the third period. Finland, slightly trailing through fatigue, took too many penalties and Team Canada collected on the mistake of the Finnish. The Canadians let the red light flash five times. Both teams showed the 2,100 fans this encounter might be a worthy ‘replay’ in the final round.

MEN

KOR – USA 4-5 (2-1, 1-1, 1-2, 0-1)
An equal opportunity game for Team Korea and Team USA who met in Game 3 of the Men’s Competition in the brand new twin ice arena on the campus of the Heilongjiang Institute of Physical Education, Team USA took home their first game beating the Koreans in overtime.

JPN – SVK 1-4 (0-1, 1-2, 0-1)
A fast-paced game between Asian powerhouse Japan and Slovakia ended in a victory for the Europeans. An equally progressing game, balanced in favor of the Slovaks when Karcak and Macejka scored a goal each with hardly 25 seconds difference. This cut the pace of Team Nippon and the Slovaks ended all hope for the Japanese with a fourth goal halfway the last period.
