10th World University Triathlon Gold goes to Diemunsch (FRA - M) and Jerzyk (POL - W)

Valencia - Etienne Diemunsch from France and Agnieszka Jerzyk from Poland are the champions of the 10th World University Triathlon Championship, which was held on May 30th, 2010 on Las Arenas Beach in Valencia, organised by Universitat de València.

Etienne Diemunsch wins the men's raceIn the men’s category, Etienne Diemunsch headed the race and finally won it in a great running segment. The French triathlete took 1 hour, 43 minutes and 38 seconds, leaving fellow countryman Brice Daubord (silver) and the Portuguese Pedro Palma (bronze) behind.

Uxío Abuin was the best Spaniard in the competition held in Valencia. The Galicia-born athlete was absolutely exceptional in the last section and finished just three seconds after the third athlete. The young representative from Spain overtook several of his rivals in the final lap but he missed Palma by just a few meters. Thanks to his performance and that of the rest of his team, the Spaniards won the sAgnieszka Jerzyk wins the women's raceilver medal for teams.

In the women’s category, Agnieszka Jerzyk from Poland became the World University Triathlon Champion after completing the race in 1 hour, 55 minutes and 19 seconds. She reached the finish line unrivalled, thanks to her superiority in the running segment, leaving behind Anna Maria Mazzetti from Italy and Marine Bonnetaud from France.

Gwen Jorgensen surprised everybody, becoming vice-champion after catching up with the race leaders. The US athlete made a great showing in the last part of the running segment, with the best mark, which allowed her to reach the second position.

In doing that, the American triathlete defeated her opponents, taking the silver medal from Mazzetti, who subsequently ranked third, and leaving Bonnetaud in the fourth position, even though they both had been amongst the top three racers during most of the race.

Lastly, Anna Maria Mazzetti had to give up on the last lap of the running segment after being on the lead during the whole competition. In the end, the Italian athlete won the bronze medal.

The team ranking for the men is France, Spain and Australia and for the women Poland, USA and Italy.
